My father told me the opposite story of a fire in Limerick. A store at the William Street end of Henry Street went on fire and a passing British officer used his swagger stick to break the glass in the windows. A small fire turned into a clonflagration as he supplied a strong flow of oxygen to light it up. Apparently he had to run for cover when the Fire Brigade arrived as they wanted to douse him;-0

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/66105333@N06] Very welcome info too, thanks! Never knew that the Granville was owned by Hearnes. And £42,000 was a humongous sum back then! P.S. That photo of the tailors was taken on Thursday, 25 July 1907.
