This was taken on Broadway and Houston Street--the building on the left with the wide arches is the Cable Building (McKim, Mead & White, 1894). Houston was later widened in part thanks to subway construction, meaning that some of the buildings closest to the photographer are now long gone.

This would be the funeral of Maj. Gen. Frederick Dent Grant, U.S. Army, who died April 12, 1912, while commanding general of the Department of the East with headquarters at Governor's Island in New York Harbor. General Grant was the son of Ulysses S. Grant. There is a small collection of Frederick Dent Grant papers at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois.

Posed on the occasion of the annual lawn party on Governors Island in New York harbor, sponsored by the Army Relief Society, on May 25, 1911. General Grant, son of former President Ulysses S. Grant, was commanding officer at the Governors Island military installation until his death from cancer in April, 1912.
