    No doubt a brilliant photo but I’m inclined to think that it was staged. The headstock of the capstan lathe is fitted with a face plate, normally used for securing odd shapes or castings where a collet or chuck would not be appropriate. There is no jig or clamps attached to it and the capstan itself does not seem to have any tool blocks fitted to it. I’d hazard a guess that the picture was taken while the machine was being set up.

    I live in another poor country , I am old lathe operator from Russia , I am accidentally got find this beautiful site , with the photos of the Workers of the past … simple Workers … but so much respect from the US people of our day for them … Great memory for the past – and –Great country now ! Long Live America ! PS - during 10 years I cannot to find lathe operator in internet – simply to talk with him or her about the way of working day at your factory, mill, etc. May be now and here I’ll find the friend ? my e-male –moroz49@list.ru
