Golden Circle began operations in 1947 after construction of the main canning factory at Northgate was completed. The new facility was opened by the then Premier of Queensland, the Hon Edward Hanlon. The company was originally called 'Queensland Tropical Fruit Products', with 'Golden Circle' used as their brand name. Golden Circle was initially part of the Committee of Direction of Fruit Marketing in Queensland (COD). Under the leadership of Bernard Flewell-Smith and Percival Savage, the cannery was established as a separate business. It was split off from the COD by an amendment to the Fruit Marketing Organisation Acts. Initially, the company processed and canned pineapples and produced fruit jams. Pineapples have been at the heart of the Golden Circle brand since its earliest beginnings. A pleasant 30-minute drive from Toowoomba, just off the Gore Highway is Pittsworth. There lie some of the richest farming lands in Australia. WATER FOR TOWN. BORE AT QUILPIE. 1,000,000 GALLONS DAILY. It was officially stated on Saturday that the Quilpie bore from which there was a flow of 200,000 gallons a day at the 235ft. level, would, in all probability, yield between 900,000 and 1,000,000 gallons daily when a depth of 3000ft. was reached. Two years ago the Irrigation and Water Supply Commission put down a test bore on Whynot station, a few miles from Quilpie, which was giving a yield of almost 1,000,000 gallons a day. As the town bore was on the same strata, it is estimated that its output would eventually be about the same. This will be Qullpie's first bore water supply, and it is stated officially that from a health point of view, it will be a boon to the townspeople. Hitherto the town had to rely on a waterhole in the Warrego River for its supply, and from this water had to be carted to consumers.
