  Lieutenant Joseph Charles Stehlin (1897-1967) on an air tour selling liberty bonds. He is wearing a French WWI aviator uniform so he must have been in the Lafayette Escadrille. New York Times on April 14, 1918: "If the weather is favorable, Lieutenant Joseph C. Stehlin will start at 3 o'clock o clock this afternoon from Sheepshead Bay on his air flight through New York state in the interest of Liberty Bonds." He was born on 29 January 1897 in Brooklyn, New York City. He died in Miami Florida in 1967. Here is an image from a French archive: gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b53052449n Because he was not in the US military he would need a passport to return to the United states during wartime, so he should have a passport application with the state department ... I found it.
