James Beauchamp "Champ" Clark (1850 - 1921) Speaker of the House (1911 - 1919) Missouri Senator This picture may be from the Democratic Convention of 1912, where Clark was initially considered a frontrunner for the Presidential nomination. By the end, though, the nomination went to Woodrow Wilson.
  • Harry Angstrom said:
Yes, Clark actually received a MAJORITY of the votes on the first ballot. But not 2/3, which is what was required to secure the nomination.
  • The Library of Congress said:
Thanks! We'll fix the title to include Clark's full name in the source data and reload the description. (Location is the House of Representatives chamber at the U.S. Capitol. Compare this photo from our main photo catalog, hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/cph.3b43283 )

The photo appears in the Bain Agency's 1911 photostream, and is dated (on the negative) May 15, 1911.
  • Kristi (LOC P&P) said:
Wystan, Thanks for the more accurate date. We will add that to the record when we update.
