Queensland Red Cross Nurses during World War I

Nurses who served in World War One were exposed to the physical and mental strain of dealing with the huge number of casualties from the battles. Once a nurse enlisted, they had no choice but to serve for the duration of the war unless they got badly injured or married. More than 3 000 Australian women served as nurses during World War One. The caps or hats tied at the neck with bows are interesting. The fabric of their dresses would have to be a long wearing material such as a heavy cotton and hats and lapels with insignia gave them the look of a 'uniform' similar in style and colour to the men.
