GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/pX9rR It was Saturday 15/10/1927, according to the SMH of 18/10/1927, p.12 "HISTORICAL SOCIETY. On Saturday more than 100 members of the Royal Australian Historical Society made a tour of inspection of Cordeaux Dam. Short addresses were delivered by Captain Walsop and Mr. Cramp on the site of Hamilton Hume's home on the Appin road. The old Anglican and Roman Catholic churches at Appin, built respectively in 1839 and 1841, were visited." trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/16412073

www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/flax-plant.html "This was strictly men's work and involved placing the stems, still bundled in beets, into a pond or dammed area of waterway, and leaving them to steep" . Known as Retting.

The title of the photo in the catalogue is "Putting flax into dam, Ballynahinch", so it's most likely on the Ballynahinch River in Co. Down.

Nearer the other final end of the process to produce linen was (as we all know) the bleach green. One of the more amazing efforts to establish a location for an NLI photo 7 years ago.

Well worth (re-) reading the comments. -
