LOC --- the title on this photo is incorrect. Bain identifies the man as "W. Travers Ewell," not "w/" (which means "with").

New York Times story, January 4, 1914, takes note of upcoming costume parties among NYC socialites: query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=980CE7D91F3BE6... Other Bain/LOC photos of guests at a costume party in New York City (the lacy backdrop in all seven photos is the same):

Costume Party, New York City, January, 1914. These probably were celebrites of the New York arts community. Mrs. J. M. Flagg, for example, would be the wife of the artist James Montgomery Flagg, who is remembered now as the delineator of an iconic portrait of "Uncle Sam," in a WWI-era recruiting poster (often parodied) in which Sam points a finger at the viewer while declaring "I WANT YOU / FOR U. S. ARMY". (A Navy version also appeared). www.flickr.com/photos/45646416@N08/4184565441/
Numerous Bain/LOC photos of James Mongomery Flagg have been posted to Flickr. Here's a specimen:

given the J.M. Flagg reference, I'm figuring H.G. Dart is artist, cartoonist and illustrator Harry Grant Dart (1869-1938). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Grant_Dart Dart's wife, Luella, died in 1928 select.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=FA0712FA385B167A...

Thanks artolog: You are right that given the context of this image, that the artist Harry Grant Art could be depicted. I was unable to find a confirming photograph of him however, so we will add his name with "probably" to the description.
