Guests at a New York City costume party, January, 1914. In 1914, Rea Irvin already had a reputation as a New York bon vivant. A comic artist for Red Book magazine, in that year he illustrated numerous Red Book stories written by the humorist Ellis Parker Butler (who is now best remembered for his story, "Pigs Is Pigs.) Before WWI, Irvin also contributed a steady stream of illustrations to the old "Life" magazine, a humor weekly. Irvin in 1925 became the first art editor of a new magazine, "The New Yorker," for which he designed the first cover, a portrait of Eustace Tilley, the supercilious Regency fop who became the magazine's symbol. Costume Party, New York City, January, 1914. These probably were celebrites of the New York arts community. Mrs. J. M. Flagg, for example, would be the wife of the artist James Montgomery Flagg, who is remembered now as the delineator of an iconic portrait of "Uncle Sam," in a WWI-era recruiting poster (often parodied) in which Sam points a finger at the viewer while declaring "I WANT YOU / FOR U.
