    The contemporary newspaper reports all refer to the ship as the 'General Baquedano'. Not sure if that is splitting hairs, but it might help in research. There is an amusing photo in the SMH 1/8/1931 p.14 of the ship departing with "The rating who attempted to desert yesterday is seen holding on to a chain on the vessel's side." He was on the other (port) side trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/16797257

    beachcomber australia This is correct, it is called GENERAL BAQUEDANO and I have also seen it shortened to BAQUEDANO. I did see that SMH article, very amusing! It is such a shame it isn't a clearer photograph. I'm thinking the rating is the figure just below the middle mast, what do you think?

    Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons I think you are right - he jumped, a boat picked him up and returned him to the ship (see picture above left in Trove link). The google.news version is no better (scroll through to p.9) - news.google.com/newspapers?nid=lL5f5cZgq8MC&dat=19310... I think it happened as the ship was turning around from the ECQ berth judging from the smoke direction. I am not sure, but in THIS photo, it looks like everyone on board is looking over the port side at the drama. What fun!
