    this reminds me of sahauro cactus in southern Arizona, and of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument _ even if it IS an odd association to make.

    Why hate yourself? "Ugly" things can make good compositions. As an image, it is about the lines and forms interacting visually. "Smoke stacks" were a sign of progress from the 19th century well into the 20th century. If the clouds are mostly white, it is probably steam and not pollution, although if you are worried about global warming, non-nuclear power plants may be a concern. Great association with the saguaro. Not odd at all, since the stacks resemble the cactus...a solid observation seeing the photograph as more than just a document but as a creative work.
