Interior view of St. James' Cathedral in Townsville

    St James Anglican Cathedral, constructed in English Bond red brick with dressed sandstone trim, is located on a terraced site on Melton Hill between the Townsville central business district and Cleveland bay. The Gothic Revival building was built in two stages, both of which are quite obvious, both in materials and design. The main roof is clad with slate and has a small spire over the nave and transept junction. The lower roof to the side aisles and ambulatory has ribbed metal cladding. The chancel is surrounded by an ambulatory which contains the vestry and a Seaman's Chapel. The north transept has a large organ loft inserted and the roof features exposed trusses with a diagonally boarded ceiling. Cast iron columns with clerestory above separate the side aisles from the nave. The clerestory of the original section of the building contains stained glass windows. " In 1903 Brims family moved to Mareeba were Donald, Harriet's husband, started a joinery works, which is extended by two sons of Donald and Harriet. The company is named "Brim Bross". builds the Queensland National Bank and the Anglican Church in Mareeba. Harriet also sets up a photography business in Mareeba, using dry plate cameras manufactured by her husband."

    Tully was originally part of the Innisfail Parish. The earliest Masses were celebrated in private homes by Reverend Father Clancy OSA. St Clare’s Church was built and opened in 1927, and Tully became a separate parish in 1935. A community of Good Samaritan Sisters arrived in Tully in January 1928 in response to an appeal by Father Clancy and the Catholics of Tully. They opened a school on 3 February 1928 with an enrolment of 35 pupils, but by April this enrolment had risen to 75 pupils. The first classes were held in the church and in an old cottage which was modified for use as a school. Source: www.stclares.qld.edu.au/about-us/our-history/
