CAPTAIN A. H. ROSTROM Commander of the Carpathia, which rescued the survivors of the Titanic from the life-boats in the open sea and brought them to New York. After the Senatorial Investigating Committee had examined Captain Rostrom, at which time this specially posed photograph was taken, Senator William Alden Smith, chairman of the committee, said of Captain Rostrom: "His conduct of the rescue shows that he is not only an efficient seaman, but one of nature's noblemen."} en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Henry_Rostron

yes and he sailed in dangerous weather to save lives. without him this drama would have been even worse..

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called PERSONAL BEST - Preserving Meaningful Moments, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

This photograph is part of the Indicommons.org post April 15, 1912: The Titanic.

The gentleman pictured fourth from the left (to the right of Captain Rostron) is James Gordon Patridge Bisset, Second Officer of the SS Carpathia. Bisset would go on to become Master of both Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth during World War II. He was later named Commodore of the Cunard Line and was knighted in the 1940s.

Rikkma: Thanks for the additional information. We will add Bisset's name to the record next time we update.

Given that this photo is also from the LOC and from Bain, it seems likely that it's from the same series. Also, the captain's name is Rostron, not Rostrom.

Thanks for the tip! We’ll need to correct the Captain's name in the source data so that we can keep the information we show here in Flickr and in our own catalog ( http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/catalog.html) in sync.
