Most likely the General Strike of 1926, since another picture in this series is dated May 1926.

The first banner is for the Stepney branch of the "London Carmen." They were one of the primary unions involved in the August 1911 dock strike. According to 'A Summary Description of the Papers of National Union of Vehicle Workers' at www.warwick.ac.uk/services/library/mrc/ead/126vwcol.htm 'The National Union of Vehicle Workers was formed as the London Carmen's Trade Union in 1888. By 1892 the union's membership had declined from an initial figure of 6,000 to 2,000. The membership of the union rose again in the period 1895-1910. The London Carmen's Trade Union originally represented carters of East End traffic to and from docks and warehouses. The union had a tradition of collaboration with other unions and in 1911 delegates were sent to the first General Council meeting of the National Transport Workers' Federation. The General Secretary of the union, Sam March, sat on the Executive Council of the National Transport Workers' Federation. The London Carmen's Trade Union was strongly influenced by syndicalism and its members were prominent in the 1911 strikes in London. The failure of the 1912 London transport workers' strikes however resulted in a significant loss of membership from 8,000 members in the union to half that number in 1913. In the same year the union changed its name to the National Union of Vehicle Workers (NUVW) . The NUVW was one of the founding members of the Transport and General Workers' Union and played a significant role in bringing road haulage workers into the new union.' The TGWU was formed in 1922. So I think THIS picture is more likely to be from 1911 than 1926.

only1tanuki: We fixed the spelling of "Grenadier" in the title, to match the caption scratched into the negative. The question remains of whether the uniform and insignia belong to a Grenadier.

Drum Majors of the Grenadier Guards, both then and now, wore white leggings. The ensignia on his cross belt is also not that of the Grenadiers. It is a drum majors uniform of one of the Guards regiments but I am not sure it is the Grenadiers.

The Drum Major is wearing State Dress minus the white spatterdash gaiters that should in principle go with it. He is in fact from the Scots Guards, as the print is just clear enough to make out the thistle in the centre of the star on the baldric or cross belt. Although the relevant part of the monogram is obscured, I'd say that the photograph was taken either before or shortly after the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, as the baldric bears the "Queen's crown". The architecture in the background suggests the Tower of London as a possible location.
