Noteworthy details: right-hand drive; acetylene headlights; smooth tread tires, decorative striping and clear coats of varnish on hand crank and chassis.

technogeo-- Thanks for the details about this car and for pointing out the reflection of the photographer in the headlights. We are always interested in pictures of photographers at work, and this is an unusual one!

3 modes of transportation: walking, horse & carriage and the new fangled horseless carriage ;) My favorite part of the pic is the carriage & driver and his interaction with Mr. Bain, his glance at the spectacle on the street that was no doubt caused by the car and photographer. A great illustration of the rapid change taking place at the time. Fascinating.

The New York City garbage strike was put down by a massive hiring of strikebreakers, but outbursts of resistance continued until the end of November, as documented by stories in The New York Times. Cleanup efforts dragged on into December. "Strikers Plead to be Taken Back" New York Times story, November 21, 1911: query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9A02E3DC1231E2...
