From famousamericans.net/luthertracytownsend/ "TOWNSEND, Luther Tracy, clergyman, born in Orono, Maine, 27 September, 1838. He was graduated at Dartmouth in 1859 and at Andover theological seminary in 1862, and ordained to the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal church. During the civil war he was adjutant of the 16th New Hampshire volunteers, He was professor of exegetical theology in Boston university in 1867-'8 and of historical theology in 1869-'73, and since the last date has occupied the chair of practical theology. Dartmouth gave him the degree of D. D. in 1871. " and from www.library.yale.edu/div/exhibits/Darwin.htm "Luther Tracy Townsend (1838-1922) was professor at Boston Theological Seminary (now Boston University School of Theology). He argued that scientific theories should be held as mere "working hypotheses." To "possess weight" a working hypothesis must receive the assent of all, or nearly all, who are capable of investigating the subject. By the time of the publication of Evolution or creation, the consensus of scientists was hardening against Darwinism in any form. Seizing the opportunity, Townsend applied the rule. Darwin's hypothesis should have no weight except that accorded to other very questionable speculations.'
