Interesting to compare what we see of Kirribilli in the 1870s American and Australasian Photographic Co. pic with this ca. early 1920s aerial pic...if you zoom in you can see there are a couple of survivors... www.flickr.com/photos/statelibraryofnsw/30131493137/ trove.nla.gov.au/work/13375982 - Wotonga and Woodlands also appear in the distance in this 1850s George Peacock painting of Government House, etc...

Fort Macquarie was located on Bennelong Point, where the Opera House now is www.lib.mq.edu.au/all/journeys/related/fortmacquarie.html It fascinates me that, although there are defences further up the Harbour, the size of the nascent city was such that defences on Bennelong Point, Dawes Point and Fort Denison existed. The area actuallly covered is so small by modern standards.

smarlowe71 Thanks for that, but it isn't the building I was thinking of; I meant above and behind the Domain (see my note). Did a bit of streetview google-ing, and it is the City Ford building, on the block of Riley, Kennedy, Crown, and Sutton Streets, Woolloomooloo.
