[@aburinho - No, the Opera House location is the next headland to the left.] I think the photographer was on top of the 'Garden Palace' which was opened the previous year 1879, and burned down in 1882. Hence the great height and the flagpole on one of the towers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garden_Palace

Fort Macquarie was located on Bennelong Point, where the Opera House now is www.lib.mq.edu.au/all/journeys/related/fortmacquarie.html It fascinates me that, although there are defences further up the Harbour, the size of the nascent city was such that defences on Bennelong Point, Dawes Point and Fort Denison existed. The area actuallly covered is so small by modern standards.
