    William T. File was a New York City police officer. In this photo he is most likely giving testimony in one of the the murder trails (1912 and 1914) of Charles Becker, the first American police officer ever executed for murder. File is mentioned in a couple of paragraphs in this long New York Times article from July, 1912, and in a few other Times articles of the time. He is listed as the second witness for the prosecution in the 1914 retrial in this May 4, 1914, Times article.

    The focus on the side profile of the witness's face in contrast to the blurred background gives importance to the subject. The police officer's body language also speaks volumes, from his hand clutched around his hat to his slumpy posture.

He was one of several star witnesses in the Becker-Rosenthal trial, among these being fellow gamblers Bridgie Webber, Harry Vallon, and Sam Schepps. Rose's testimony was the most damaging because he directly implicated Becker in arranging the murder of Herman Rosenthal. As Becker's debt collector, Rose confessed to hiring the Lenox Avenue Gang, providing the getaway car. He testified he did it all on the orders of Charles Becker.

    If I am not mistaken, F. Scott Fitzgerald used him as the model for Wolfsheim, the gambler and mobster who befriends Jay Gatsby. There is a scene in the book that refers to the entire Becker case, etc.

    Possibly the taxi-cab driver originally implicated in the death of Herman Rosenthal. Policeman Charles Becker was later arrested (July 1912) found guilty, and executed for Rosenthal's murder.
