Below see link to Wikipedia article about Gyp, the Blood also known as Harry Horowitz. Horowitz and his gang were convicted and executed, apparently they were believed to be acting at behest of NYPD Police Lieutenant Charles Becker, and there are photos in this Flickr series of Becker going to Sing Sing also. (see tag for Becker). They killed Herman Rosenthal. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gyp_the_Blood

Alva Belmont was quite a woman! I'm not sure if that's her, though.

I agree that it looks like her. NYT article (August 15, 1912) at query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9B05E6DB113AE633A... suggests that August Belmont (my guess is that would be Alva's brother-in-law but possibly her father-in-law - -both were August) was on the list for the Grand Jury for the Rosenthal murder. [See comments for www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2423488718/] Alva Belmont was a widow by now and had taken on the suffragette cause, which might have included an interest in women being able to serve on juries. Attending such a trials may have been her cup of tea. She had been active in the 1911 strike, monitoring trials, and legislative aftermath of a tragic fire in a sweatshop (the Triangle Shirtwaist fire -- see www.gale.cengage.com/free_resources/whm/trials/triangle.htm).
