    There doesn't appear to be any firestep on the enemy side of the trench (designed so you can stand up clearly to fire your rifle horizontally) and everything appears rather untidy and worn. Is it possible that this, like several of the other Hurley war photos in this stream are examples of what the battlefield was like, rather than the actual front line? For instance, his camera (and presumably he, himself) seem rather high and exposed for a front-line position?

    U-848. Sunk 5 Nov 1943 in the South Atlantic south-west of Ascension Island, in approximate position 10.09S, 18.00W, by depth charges from 3 Liberator and 2 Mitchell aircraft (VB-107 & US Army 1st Compron). 63 dead (all hands lost).
