Elizabeth Freeman (center) (holding flag) "Elizabeth Freeman (1876-1942), was a suffragist and civil rights activist. Her name, and signature, is often given as "Elisabeth". [1] "The family emigrated to the United States and the family lived on Long Island in New York, where her mother, Mary Hall Freeman, worked for an orphanage. In 1913 she took part in the national Suffrage Hike to the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson in Washington, District of Columbia. She dressed as a gypsy and drove a yellow, horse-drawn wagon that was stenciled with Votes for Women symbols and it carried pro-suffrage literature. --Wikipedia

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Imperator SS Imperator was an ocean liner built for the Hamburg America Line (German: Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft or HAPAG) launched in 1912.

That's the German luxury liner Imperator, of the Hamburg America Line, circa 1913. Note the eagle on the bow, which was later removed after the wings were ripped off in storm. After WWI, she was taken by the UK and became Cunard's Berengaria.

I believe that the "unidentified" comment reflects the fact that the ship was not identified in the original image. All the information you see here is metadata about the object. At least I think that's the case...

It says "IMPERATOR" by the forward mast.

NYTimes reported in 1913:


"HEMPSTEAD, L.I., May 22. -- The townsfolk here are waiting with much curiosity for the suffrage pageant which Gen. Rosalie Jones has arranged for next Saturday afternoon. On that day those interested in the suffrage cause, will march from Mineola to this place. At the trolley junction the parade will be reviewed by Assemblyman O'Keefe and officials of Nassau County."

Two days later, also in the New York Times:

"Hempstead, N.Y., May 24. -- Three miles of public highway between Mineola and Hempstead were crowded this afternoon with a long line of automobiles from all parts of Nassau County as they followed the suffrage pageant, in which 500 women and a few men marched as enthusiastic upholders of the cause."
