Mrs. Edith W. Pierce, a nurse by training, became Philadelphia's first female city inspector of highways and street cleaning in 1913. She founded a Junior Sanitation League to encourage young people to take an interest in healthy urban environments. The Junior Sanitation League had over 10,000 members during her time, with each child wearing a pin that said "For Clean Philadelphia Streets." chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045211/1914-09-19/ed-... She's mentioned in Martin V. Melosi, Garbage in the Cities: Refuse, Reform, and the Environment (University of Pittsburgh Press 2004): p. 106.

If her name is Edith, why has someone tried to confuse the issue by tagging the photo with the name "Elizabeth"?

Thanks Infrogmation. We'll correct Sir McKenzie's initials, and add the date, the next time we update the record.
