Bourbong Street Many grand and historical buildings have been built in Bundaberg since it was founded in 1867. - The Commercial Hotel was built. Later, in 1885, a new two-storeyed building renamed ‘The Grand’ was built on the same site (corner of Targo and Bourbon streets). - The original School of Arts was also built in 1871, but the current building was constructed in 1889. It is Bundaberg’s oldest public building still standing in its original form - Adam’s Hotel was built on the corner of Barolin and Bourbon streets. It was renamed Metropolitan and demolished in 1885. - 1887 Bourbon Street was developed as the main business area of Bundaberg. - 1888 The first substantial council headquarters were built in Bourbon Street (west side of the Post Office). - 1913 Bourbong Street is being described a being two chains wide with many ornate business premises and weeping fig trees. - 1915 Electric light poles are seen down the sides of Bourbong Street, with a single street light in the middle of intersections. Golden Circle began operations in 1947 after the construction of the main canning factory at Northgate was completed. The new facility was opened by the then Premier of Queensland, the Hon Edward Hanlon. The company was originally called 'Queensland Tropical Fruit Products', with 'Golden Circle' used as its brand name. Golden Circle was initially part of the Committee of Direction of Fruit Marketing in Queensland (COD). Under the leadership of Bernard Flewell-Smith and Percival Savage, the cannery was established as a separate business. It was split off from the COD by an amendment to the Fruit Marketing Organisation Acts. Initially, the company processed and canned pineapples and produced fruit jams. Pineapples have been at the heart of the Golden Circle brand since its earliest beginnings. James ATHERTON was born on 8 May 1830 in Blackrod, Lancashire, England, died on 23 December 1903 in Queensland, Australia at age 73, and was buried on 24 December 1903 in Yeppoon Cemetery, Queensland, Australia. In 1856, James with his younger brother John, overlanded sheep from the family property of `Bold Blair near Armidale to Queensland and formed a sheep station called `Rosewood'. James remained around this area all his life. He invested in Mount Morgan Mine which did not prove successful losing his property and lastly moved to `Copland` (now St. Brendans College) where he died in December 1903.
