I don`t think it is "clearly" regent street, it may be a composite of buildings? Which theatre/cinema do you think it is on the right?

I agree it is a 'composite'. The 'theatre' could be corner of Beak Street but it doesn't look right. Also it looks like All Souls Church is up on the right whereas it is actually right at the top at Langham Place near the BBC.

This is a concoction. The theatre is clearly based on the Gaiety at Strand/Aldwych. I took this photo of it in 1955:

The impression I get from a few NYTimes articles is that he was often attacked for the things he said.

Typical "Tyneside Flats" with front and rear views in one photo. On the right of the photo the two front doors are together. The right door was for the ground-floor flat. The left door was for the staircase to the upper flat. In Stanley, County Durham some designs had 4 front doors grouped together. In the centre of the photo is the rear view with an open staircase leading to the upper flat. Imagine coming down that staircase in the dark winter to visit the outside toilet. Each small back yard had its own back gate and coal house. There were chimney stacks for the living room and kitchen coal fires.
