Eldon Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, 1963

Another great photo. I've always wondered if the land and area where the new Eldon Square was built on was poor quality? Derelic housing, slums etc? I ask because how they poured concrete over the land was very dramatic! The original Eldon Square which was left alone is a lovely little haven and it would've been a shame if similar structures and land was decimated in the name of shopping..

Many thanks for your comments. I have to admit that this is one of my favourite aerial images - the view seems very familiar but when you look closely you can see so many changes.

The gal with the smoke makes it.

Is the man on the right wearing in beige tartan trousers? I remember the 70's, not good. The woman on the left with the fag does not place the picture in time, but it is the 'hip man about town' on the right (Bangs More Buzz at Burton's?). In Sheffield, where I live, old ladies, like the one on the left existed well in to the late 1980's especially in the markets.
