As children, when we asked for expensive Xmas presents, Dad would always say, "Oh Aye, when the ship comes up Dean Street!" We didn't know where Dean Street was - never mind the gradient! We're still waiting for that ship!

I remember "Valspar" paints, a name not seen today in a world of B & Q, Homebase etc. The most modern British car in the photograph is the Ford Consul Mk2; the pale car disappearing to the right is, I think, a Fiat 1500.

believe it or not B and Q do sell Valspar paints, they are one of the oldest paint companies around, more widely know for ther car and motorcyle type paints

The dark coloured board next to Sheldon's is the entrance to Matthew H. Wilson, Leather Factors. You went up a small lane to a huge warehouse which was behind these shops. They supplied cobblers with leather, nails, glue etc. Everything they needed to make and repair shoes. The shop with the Awning was their retail store selling fine leather handbags and purses etc. I worked in the office there in the early 60's.
