Curtiss biplane called "The New York Times" to Newport News one day, the one he had flown in a race from Chicago to Governor's Island, New York in eight and one-half hours. NYT of Nov 4, 1916 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E07E5DB1430E733A... indicates that he reached Governor's Island ahead of schedule and General Wood had to hurry from his quarters to meet Carlson.

Carlstrom is flying the R-7 variant of the Curtiss Model R biplane. It was the only one built.
