Curtiss biplane called "The New York Times" to Newport News one day, the one he had flown in a race from Chicago to Governor's Island, New York in eight and one-half hours. " NYT of Nov. 3, 1916 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9B06E5D8143BE633A... reports on his flight, which broke the American non-stop flight record for the flight from Chicago to Erie, PA (452 miles) and on to Hammondsport, NY that night His plan was to fly on to Governor's Island on Nov. 3. NYT of Nov 4, 1916 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E07E5DB1430E733A... indicates that he reached Governor's Island ahead of schedule and General Wood had to hurry from his quarters to meet Carlson.
