Private Chester W. Ballard served with the Butchery Co. #307 in France on the USS McClellan, a troop ship which had been converted into a refrigerator ship, where fresh meat for the army could be stored and frozen before going to the battle front. Butchery Co. #307 consisted of 57 selected men, 1 officer, 20 noncommissioned officers and 36 Privates nearly all of which were in some way experienced in storing, freezing and shipping meats.

The writing on the ship's side appears to say "US Army Transport/McClellan" but it pixelates and I can't be sure.
