May be the USS McClellan, which was in service during WWI.
Private Chester W. Ballard served with the Butchery Co. #307 in France on the USS McClellan, a troop ship which had been converted into a refrigerator ship, where fresh meat for the army could be stored and frozen before going to the battle front. Butchery Co. #307 consisted of 57 selected men, 1 officer, 20 noncommissioned officers and 36 Privates nearly all of which were in some way experienced in storing, freezing and shipping meats.

The writing on the ship's side appears to say "US Army Transport/McClellan" but it pixelates and I can't be sure.

Slack13: thanks for the research on the McClellan. The ship appears to be the US Army Transport McClellan, purchased by the Army in 1898 and used until it was sold in 1919. See information from the Naval Historical Center: www.history.navy.mil/photos/sh-us-cs/army-sh/usash-mr/mcc...
