Danny Lyon, thank you for making your images available... I honestly enjoyed looking through the eyes of someone I've never known... yet, I felt like I was right there all along. Amazing.

    NYT of April 28, 1914, query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=FB0916FF3C5E13738...
    GALVESTON, Texas, April 27.
    Paragraph near the end includes:
"A forty-foot launch came into port to-night carrying several Americans who made their escape from Tampico and braved 465 miles of open Gulf between Galveston and the Panuco River in the open boat. The refugees were employes [sic] of an American dredging company, working near Tampico."

The launch is in the next photo:

Thanks so much, swanq, for providing the link, and connecting the images around this event. We'll fill in some of the missing information the next time we update the records.

Dr. R.L. Wilson, Galveston quarantine (LOC)

According to The Rice belt journal. (Welsh, Calcasieu Parish, La.), 30 July 1915, image 6, col 4. chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn88064402/1915-07-30/ed-... Dr R. L. Wilson was the surgeon in charge of the federal quarantine station at Galveston. There was clearly a controversy between state and federal responsibility for inspecting incoming vessels.
  • Jon (LOC P&P) said:
Thanks for the information swanq. I found several newspapers of the time that list him at Dr. Robert L. Wilson.
