Janet Sanderson alias Bell, arrested for robbery

Such good quality imagery. Ignore the clothing and look at her face - like it was taken today. Just checked a map for the named streets and it's hard to believe things could be like that there.

That's what happens when there's no education, limited work and no social safety net. The story reads like Dickens.

So a 'baddun' asked to join the army instead of going to prison. Was the army really so bad?!

Holey Dollar, New South Wales, minted 1813, from Spanish silver dollar minted in 1798

why were NSW coins minted from a spanish dollar?
  • State Library of New South Wales said:
In the early years of settlement there was a shortage of coins in circulation and it was hard to keep them in the colony as they were used as payments for goods from visiting ships. This solution was to import a large number of Spanish silver coins and cut a hole in the centre then re-stamp them in New South Wales with different values - this picture is of the outside (the holey dollar) the circle cut from the centre was called a dump. and was of a lower value and was also re-stamped.
