I wonder what those 3 long things are in the background there on the left.

B-59 Thanks B-59, but still has me wondering what those three things are. What a great history resource that oregonnews is! They look almost like giant straps or searchlights but I don't think it's either of those.

Galilla S The stripes are perhaps a developing failure, but they are not really explainable to me. The UC5 has a wikipedia entry: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SM_UC-5 The submarine was captured in April 1916 already, after it had run aground. Oct. 25, 1917 to Jan ... books.google.com/books?id=DYxDAQAAMAAJ&pg=PA16-IA2 Caption with photo is "German crew and submarine which surrendered to the U.S.S. Fanning. This is the first capture at sea of Germans by American Forces. An event which will go down in history."
