SM U-3 or U-III was the lead boat of the U-3 class of submarines or U-boats built for and operated by the Austro-Hungarian Navy (German: Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine or K.u.K. Kriegsmarine) before and during the First World War. The submarine was built as part of a plan to evaluate foreign submarine designs, and was built by Germaniawerft of Kiel, Germany.

Sometimes Flickr and the National Library of Ireland are amazing!

• Foxglove said:

there appears to have been significant scratch processing around his legs , feet and sidearm which looks more like a bayonnet than a long muzzle pistol ?

The 'Mystery Man of Banna Strand', Monteith was indeed on the submarine with Casement, but managed to evade capture and eventually escaped to America. He was married to my great great (I think!) grand aunt, Mary Florence “Mollie” Burke Monteith. His daughter Florence Monteith Lynch wrote a great book 'The Mystery Man of Banna Strand' about his life and evading capture capture, sadly long out of print. Great photo!

franburke Always great to hear from a relative! We have a copy of the ‘Mystery Man of Banna Strand’ here at the National Library if you ever want to see it in the flesh. Or it's available online at the Hathi Trust.
