Like this description from the Visit Shrewsbury website: "As you may have guessed from the name, this street was once where the towns butchers would ply their trade. Before the days of refrigeration, one can barely think about the pong that must wafted down the street during one of our hot Shropshire summers! "On holy days when aldermen went to meetings, there was a rush to find the best line to walk. Against the buildings was the safest bet where they would protected from any materials that may have been thrown from the upper floors into the streets. The worst place would have been the middle of the street where all the sludge would have accumulated."
