Egg white, or albumen, was used to bind the light-sensitive chemicals to the paper. It was the dominant method in the second half of the 19th century, until replaced by gelatin and collodion paper. Previous to the negative-positive print, invented by Fox Talbot, photographs were one offs onto metal, as invented by Daguerre.
