The highest-resolution version of the photo available on the LOC website shows that this photo was taken on East 57th Street in Manhattan. It's not exactly clear what cross-street it is, though: it could be 2nd Avenue, because the block on 2nd Ave. between 57th and 58th currently has a reasonably well-preserved set of townhouses similar to the ones in the photo (though the corner now has a McDonald's).

According to this photograph, this hotel was built in 1890 (Tom Fletcher's NYC Architecture and Wikipidea say 1900) and was demolished in 1907: digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/id?709038F and here's a 1908 photo of the present day Plaza Hotel: digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/id?1507101
