Charles Sweeney, West Point man, was in the French Foreign Legion and came back to the US as a tank expert, see Evening public ledger., May 29, 1917, Sports Extra, Page 7, with photo The Oklahoma City times., May 10, 1917, HOME EDITION, Page 2, with photo The Washington herald., May 02, 1917, Page 14, col. 5, "SWEENEY, TANK EXPERT, HERE TO ADVISE U.S."

This photo is likely from February, 1916, when Sweeney, still a Lieutenant in the French Foreign Legion, returned to the U.S. for months of recuperation from serious wounds suffered in September, 1915 in Champagne, France. query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=FA0F16F83E5E13... He arrived Feb. 22, 1916 aboard the liner SS Lafayette. chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045433/1916-02-23/ed-...
