DannyM8 That's great, Danny, as it's not possible to tell from the photo that Curries at no. 4 Castle Street is a bakery/confectionery. Dating's good too - I think this is quite a late Lawrence photo. And the Curries were Congregationalists. Don't think we've come across too many of them up to now.

I can just picture the guy standing in the middle with a whip in one hand. Looks like a dreadful sweat-shop and why are they working from the floor?

Well Stu, I think that's more modern sensibilities at work. There are photos from all over the world of tailors sitting in exactly this position, sometimes on the floor, sometimes on raised benches. And in fairness, the space is actually quite bright. I found myself wondering how they heated the place in winter though...

It looks more like a prison camp.

National Library of Ireland on The Commons That's true and I've also seen pictures of tailors working in a similar position. Wonder why they work in that seemingly uncomfortable position? How long can they sit like that on hard wooden flooring? Now, I'm surmising here....it would be nice to know if the man standing to our right is Mr Hearne himself and the other two to the left perhaps clerks? The man standing near the centre could possibly be the shop governor (foreman) and looks to be a hard task-master? Heating? If there's no fireplace then a couple of paraffin (kerosene) heaters. But without adequate ventilation the room would be very stuffy and nauseous, leading to headaches.

Both! Looking at the OSI site at GeoHive, Number 64 on Merchant's Quay (now Meagher's Quay) stretched right back to George's Street behind. Today the site is split between the Granville Hotel on the Quay and a shopping centre on George's street, but back in the day, it was one site.

The word Overseer comes to mind for those standing up? The workers all seem to be reasonably well dressed, perhaps as a perk of the job they were able to make a suit for themselves? Is there a status attaching to the hats that can be seen in the photo. Ps - the note feature you talked about last week is sorely missed
