What a beautiful photograph! I would have loved to see it in glorius techni-colour, but there is something about the old style photographs that modern cameras just do not capture!

Might have been a taxidermic prop - the photographers of the era did use such things. But it does look alive to me. The child may be holding the head to keep it still, and the other girl's skirt may be conveniently hiding a moving tail.
