According to STANFORD CREW HISTORY 1893-1956, by G. Wayne Dow [ www.gdow.net/pdffiles/crewhist.pdf ], Seward was Varsity captain of Stanford Crew in 1912. Also, page 453 of Cornell Alumni News [ ecommons.library.cornell.edu/bitstream/1813/3529/3/014_38... ] indicates that Cornell lent Stanford and Capt. Seward its coaching launch in 1912. A Cornell launch is certainly in the other picture, www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2890283224/in/p... .

See also www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163148987/ . That picture looks like the first three or four (from the left) in this one. According to NYT at query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9F04E6DE113AE633A..., the crew is Olmsted (bow), Beale, Smith, Watkins, Duryea, Walford, Seward , Partridge (stroke), and Guerena (cox)

The bridge displayed here is the railroad bridge, which burned in 1974 but is still standing. It is no longer in use as a railroad bridge. Plans have been made to reopen it as a walking bridge. Normally, when people say the Poughkeepsie Bridge they are thinking of the automobile bridge a bit to the south of the railroad bridge. It was built in the 1930s after this picture was taken.
