I think the bottom caption is incorrect (fault of the Tribune, not LOC): that's the Flood mansion on the right, if you compare to the pictures in the previous edition.

rjones0856 is right. The building on the right is James C. Flood's house, now the Pacific Union Club. The site of the Hopkins Art Institute, now the location of the Mark Hopkins Hotel, is concealed by the Flood house in this photo.
