This is an amazing piece of Sydney's history. I didn't know we had ever had an outbreak of plague.

Mariasme There were 12 major plague outbreaks in Australia between 1900 and 1925. Official government statistics record 1371 cases resulting in 535 deaths. The 1900 outbreak in Sydney is the most widely known, mainly due to the remarkable photographic work of John Degotardi, Jr. See also State Records' Purging Pestilence – Plague! pellethepoet Yes, there is a Johnston [sic] Lane in Annandale, whizz-up-and-downable in GoogleStreetView. Matching view not yet found, unfortunately. The houses on the left look relatively OK, and may still survive.

Not only are the houses just a memory - so is the street. Campbell St with its quaint cottages, and some adjacent streets, were resumed by the City Council in the 1920s to 'sanitise / modernise' Surry Hills. See map of resumptions here: www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/history/sydneystreets/Lost_St...

Andy Brill Sydney must have changed incredibly during that period, the resumptions at the southern end being overtaken by the resumptions at the northern end caused by the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. And below the city the construction of the city railway.

The 1920s and the 1950s/60s were the big development periods for Sydney ( or destructive - depending on your viewpoint) with so many Victorian and Georgian gems razed. I love the whitewashed fence with paint spatter all over the ground!

I am not sure about 1900, but 82 Campbell Street, Surry Hills, is now on the corner of Foster Street, and rebuilt in 1905 according to the top of the 'new' building - GoogleMapsStreetView
