When I came to work in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1969, I saw the last days of scenes like this on Tyneside. The local people said that when the ships were being built, they sheltered the streets from the wind, and they noticed the difference when the ships were launched and moved away.

Swordscookie I think it would have been very impressive. There was also a massive firework display on the Harbour. Read All About It - including an engraving of the scene at the Town Hall (half an hour later!!) - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/page/1312681
