Bain's photo has been inscribed with the date, 9/27/11. A New York Times story, September 28, 1911, reported some of the events: "Columbia University began its . . . academic year yesterday with a large entering class. . . . The real indication that college was open was the hostilities between the freshmen and sophomores. There was little of the old-time fighting, however, the nearest thing to a battle being an organized tug of war on South Field, which provided merriment for hundreds of spectators." I'm from Wisconsin, and my grandfather shook hands with president Taft in 1912 when Taft visited Appleton, Wisconsin. Grandpa was ten years old. The president suddenly turned to him and said, "Little boy, how would you like to shake hands with the president of the United States?" Big turning point and influence on my grandfather's life. When George Bush came to Appleton, the Post-Crescent newspaper declared it was the first time a "sitting president" had come to town. My grandfather straightened the newspaper out, which was duly acknowledged in a follow up article. Pauline was from Kenosha, Wisconsin.
