It's Sivlefossen, actually, not Silve-, like the Norwegian poet Per Sivle (1857-1904) - raised at the farm just above this waterfall.

A little more about the scenery. Per Sivle was not born here but at Flaam where his mother came from, but his father was from this place and Sivle also grew up here living with relatives as his mother died early in his age. We are not in the area of Hardangerfjord, This place is a short drive from Gudvangen at Naeroyfjord, a branch of Sognefjorden.

The newer photo is taken from the head of the fjord at the cite of Gudvangen. The old one is from farther north, and in the foreground we have the path built for the postman around 1650. The post route between Oslo (then Christiania) and Bergen usually used a rowboat here, but when bad ice covered the fjord, the postman used the path we can see a part of here in the front. The path ended at the farm Styvi which you just can see in the background as a white dot close to the sea. Farther north, there usually was no ice on the fjord.
