This is George Fried, captain of the S.S. Roosevelt. The negative has the date January 29, 1926. On Sunday, January 24, 1926, in stormy weather, the British steamship Antinoe sent out as SOS picked up by the United States SS Roosevelt. Roosevelt proceeded to the spot given in the SOS, but found the Antinoe was 100 miles off course. Using a radio compass, the Roosevelt was able to proceed to the correct spot of the Antinoe. Captain Fried kept his ship by for more than three days and succeeded in rescuing more than 20 members of the Antinoe crew, although two crew members of the S.S. Roosevelt were lost during the rescue when they were swept overboard. "Capt. Fried of S.S. "Roosevelt," Hero in rescue of 20 on freighter" The Washington times.
