NYT of Feb 6, 1914 query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9C04E3DE113FE633A... reported, "AMERICAN LEAGUE TO PLAN WAR ON RIVALS; Secret Conference to be Held in New York Next Week -- Rules Changes."
  • Ryan (LOC P&P) said:
Thanks for the link to the article, swanq. At the very least we learn who attended the conference. In the photo, I think that Ben Minor is standing second from left, and that Joe Lannin is seated at right. See: www.loc.gov/pictures/item/ggb2005017518. I welcome confirmation or denial, so please keep the conversation going.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I found www.baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?40306-Historical-Ar... useful in my attempts to identify men without identification notes attached.

I think I figured out the people in the image: Standing from left to right are: *Clark Calvin Griffith (1869-1955) of the Washington Senators. *Joseph John Lannin (1866-1928) of the Boston Red Sox *Unknown man *Robert Lee Hedges (1869-1932) of the St. Louis Browns *Frank J. Navin (1875-1935) of the Detroit Tigers *William Harridge (1883-1973), secretary of the American League Sitting from left to right are: *Connie Mack (1862-1956) of the Philadelphia Athletics *Frank J. Farrell (1866-1926) of the New York Yankees *Charles W. Somers (1868-1934) of the Cleveland Indians *Ban Johnson (1864-1931), president of the American League *Ben Shibe (1838-1922) of the Philadelphia Athletics *Benjamin Saunders Minor (1865-1946) of the Washington Senators

LOC -- your date in brackets below the photo [1912] is incorrect. The negative bears the date 1913.
  • Kristi (LOC P&P) said:
Wystan, The [1912] date does appear to be incorrect, and not just because of the date on the negative! Mr. Flanner on the far right is reading a 1913 souvenir score book issued by the Athletics for the World Series, so that further confirms the date. The full date is likely 10/8/13 despite the 10/9/13 on the negative. Game 2 of the 1913 World Series took place at Shibe Park in Philadelphia on Oct. 8, while Game 3 took place the next day in Brooklyn at the Polo Grounds. Thanks for the heads up!
