On this History page of the SEDOV there is a slide show of contemporary photos of the MAGDALENE VINNEN with accompaniment of a German sea song with accordion - maybe what they sounded like? - www.sts-sedov.info/eng/history/

beachcomber australia ooooh just got to this now. Do you reckon it could be a recording from that time? Perhaps it is worth us contacting them to find out where that sound recording came from! What a record if it is! Love it, thanks so much for pointing us to it.

Australian National Maritime Museum on The Commons No I don't think it is an old recording, but certainly an old song which gives an idea of what a German male chorus with accordion accompaniment sounded like.

The houses remind me of the ones described in Zora Neale Hurston's book "Their Eyes Were Watching God"

Houses like this were common in Southeast Texas and Lousianna into the 1980's.

    Can you really say "negro"?
  • Ceridwen said:
I think you should be able to say "negro," although I haven't actually heard it used in years. There might be some people offended by it (you can always find somebody who is offended by something) but it doesn't have the deadly taboo status of that other "n word."
