These are basket-case Third World poverty conditions . . . there were apparently parallel universes going on in one country. One half (white) appears to be mass-producing aircraft with which to combat evil and tyranny abroad in Europe and Asia; the other (black) half are living in the evil of poverty and tyranny of discrimination at home. What can be acknowledged overseas as evil may be un-acknowledgeable at home?

    No kidding.

pleroma - in certain parts of the USA, there is still third world poverty today. It's much more startling in 2008 to see people living in squalor than it was to see this type of thing at the tail end of the Depression.

I was astonished when in the early 90s I came to the USA and saw this home grown degradation for my own eyes. Coming from Europe I'd only seen relatively positive images of American prosperity and power in the media: this was the can-do superpower that had landed men on the moon . . . . And yet it couldn't take care of its own people adequately.

It still can't. We're a first world nation with large third world areas.

This is awesome! I wonder if any of these types of houses have been preserved by National Trust?
  • Ian Sanderson said:
AussieGold There are some in Kosciuszko National Park and the Alpine National Park in Victoria. Most are a little more substantial than this, but the principle is the same. Kosciuszko Huts Association. I doubt that this hut is in KNP. This is Horse Camp Hut, in the KNP.
