From Random House: "Juke joint (or jook joint) is the vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring blues music, dancing, and alcoholic drinks, primarily operated by African American people in the southeastern United States. I doubt the caption. Given the conditions of the time and place, that housing looks pretty upscale -- relatively new roof and siding. Definitely better than the "shack" in the other photos.

I agree. I wonder why they were condemned. Perhaps there was rampant illness or some other reason. The condition of the cabins looks pretty good for the time.
