I love the little girl in the dress. Also, I like the little baby with the overalls. One of his overalls is hanging off of his little shoulder. It is so adorable.

Man, this is some Jim Crow shotgun shack grinding poverty. Nothing adorable about it.

From Random House: "Juke joint (or jook joint) is the vernacular term for an informal establishment featuring blues music, dancing, and alcoholic drinks, primarily operated by African American people in the southeastern United States. The term "juke" is believed to derive from the Gullah word joog, meaning rowdy or disorderly."

Houses which have been condemned by the Board of Health, but are still occupied by Negro Migratory workers, Belle Glade, Fla. (LOC)

What sort of automobile is that?

I doubt the caption. Given the conditions of the time and place, that housing looks pretty upscale -- relatively new roof and siding. Definitely better than the "shack" in the other photos.

    "Upscale"? You're joking, right?

    Relatively, I said...

I agree. I wonder why they were condemned. Perhaps there was rampant illness or some other reason. The condition of the cabins looks pretty good for the time.
